Styling open shelves can be intimidating. It can be difficult to know what pieces to source, and how to put them all together once you’re ready to style. Today, our stylist Marcie is sharing some of her thoughts on styling open kitchen shelves.

  • Make the shelves functional, as well as pretty. Mix items that you need access to often with meaningful and eclectic accessories to achieve the look you’re going for.

  • Use pieces that you already own! Don’t worry about having to source all new items for your open shelves. In Marianne's kitchen, we wanted to keep the palette neutral and styled her open shelves with mostly pieces she already owned, which were both utilitarian and fun.

  • We recommend purchasing neutral pieces as you need them, so that everything already goes together when you’re styling.

  • Place items that you use frequently at convenient heights, while putting the less usable pieces higher or lower.

  • While purchasing pieces, keep in mind that white ceramics, glass, wood, brass and copper accents all work well together and achieve a cohesive neutral look. Adding fun antique pieces and figures can give the space a personal touch.
